The compact
Competence before opinion. Process before persuasion.
Melbourne's west does not need another institution telling it what to think. It needs reporting that makes claims testable, sources findable and public decisions legible.
We will be direct without becoming careless, sceptical without becoming cynical, and local without losing sight of the systems that shape local outcomes.
Six working principles
The standard is visible.
Local is not small
A bus route, planning decision, school delay or hospital promise can shape daily life more than a national headline.
Show the uncertainty
Confirmed facts, public claims, scenarios and unresolved questions must never be presented as the same thing.
Right of reply means reply
People and institutions facing substantive criticism should have a fair opportunity to respond on the record.
Corrections are publishing
A visible correction is evidence that the work is alive, accountable and more important than our pride.
Independence must be practical
Editorial independence is not a mood. It requires clear funding boundaries, disclosed interests and consistent standards.
What we will not do
Heat is not the same as light.
- Manufacture certainty where the evidence is incomplete.
- Confuse access to a person with endorsement of that person.
- Hide a source gap behind confident language.
- Chase conflict when the public consequence is the real story.
- Treat corrections or right of reply as reputational threats.
